Gifts for Gardeners 2009: All wrapped up

Dianne Benson's Garden Gift Bag

Uh oh. It's the third night of Hanukkah and only 11 more shopping days until Christmas. Time to get cracking.

Luckily for you I have culled through the new garden merchandise and books for 2009 and have a list of five sure-fire gift ideas, one coming each day this week.

Was your favorite gardener extra good this year?

The luxe gift is this wears-like-iron Yard Bag, chock full of items to make a gardener gasp with joy:

*Japanese clippers

*English twine

*Fabled plant markers and magic pencil

*And what she calls the ultimate trowel--all chosen and packed up for you by Dianne Benson, one of the most famous gardeners in America.

A holiday discount takes the price down to $95. That includes gift wrap and a hand-written card.

For more on Dianne Benson check out the intro to her online gardening store and her suggestions on the best dramatic plants for Sacramento and Sierra Nevada foothills gardeners.

Time to get cracking is right. Loved Dianne's site. My favorite is the Tool Belt Loaded. Now, if I were to have a tool belt....what would I load it with?

Red Studio, Dianne's for the garden, one for your writing/photography, one for your sculpture. I'd need a pencil and pad, and a dog leash, for starters.

Love the Christmas ideas and have forwarded several to my husband. It's winter in Iowa and as someone once said, it's the best time for our garden (in our mind, of course) as it's perfect. At this time we only have great expectations of the coming spring and how perfect and weedless it will all be. The seed catalogues have seen to that. I emailed you earlier this year and mentioned the "Free Weeds" block by my side door. You suggested I put it away. As I'm something of a wise-a** to those who know me, I kept it out and only put it away two weeks ago before the snow came and the point became mute. (My friends would have expected nothing less.) Love your blog!
In the coming year, may all your garden dreams come true and be weedless too.

Lisa, Yes, this is the ideal season in the garden, all hope and no heartbreak. I'm glad that controversial sign did not sap your gardening energy this summer. I hope the importuning to your husband pays off--some treats from Dianne B would really kick you into high gear when the weather warms up. Thanks for your kind words about the blog and happy holidays to you!
