Autumn evening

The Lovers (Autumn Evening), c.1888, Emile Friant (1863-1932)*

A reminder for all of us to stop with the raking of the leaves, the pruning of the wisteria, the dividing of the daffodils--and enjoy the quiet times of the season.

*Emile Friant was a French artist. This painting hangs in the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Nancy in France.

It is actually quiet and peaceful here (all right it IS 3:42 a.m.). The moon is a lovely crescent, Mercury is NOT in retrograde, the weather is lovely. Fire season is over and all's right in my little world. It really isn't but I think Mercury not being in retrograde really helps. ;-)

Welcome Melinda! All the way from Australia? As a knitter you should check out the Materfamilias blog too.

Astrid, You are right on all counts!

Welcome Rosey Pollen! Another great "nom de bloom" as Pomona Belvedere would say. Added your entertaining blog to the Rest of the West blog roll here. I have not delved into the Colorado blogs and need to; I think we share gardening challenges. Congrats on winning at Blotanical for Best Colorado blog!

Isn't the quiet of autumn lovely? It really is one of my favorite seasons because of the slowness of the days.

Kat, How well put!

Hi DP~~ This is a good reminder to stop and smell the foliage. There's so much beauty all around us and soon it will be...a different kind of beauty.

Beautiful painting & thought...we did just that over the weekend with a visit to Central Coast wineries.

Grace, Yes, I'll go smell some foliage!

Susie, Sounds like a perfect weekend....

Good morning Daffodil Planter, what a wonderful painting. Good advice to truly embrace the beauty of the season.
I am intrigued by the people in the painting, so deep in thought or is it that they are swimming in each others' eyes? I like this piece of art.

I wish I had read your post this weekend - I could have used your advice to enjoy the stunning autumn weather instead of working on projects.

On a happy note, though, my kitchen cabinets have never been so clean and organized!

Ah, the thrilling just-touching of the elbow. Young love. The perfect season for shuffling through the fallen leaves, hand in hand, till winter comes to move the action indoors.

Well, I'm watching the snow fall out my window today! I've whined plenty about our short season climate, but this fall I'm glad to have a break. I still have a couple hundred bulbs to get in the ground before too long, though.

Janet, One art critic called Friant a cinematic painter. Seems this painting has that quality.

Susan, Luckily there are many wonderful days in Northern CA this fall!

Helen, Mmm.

VW, Snow days aren't just for closing schools--they're for closing gardens too.
