Midsummer Eve

Midsummer Eve c.1908, Edward Robert Hughes* (1851-1914)

Best wishes for an enchanting Summer Solstice Eve!

*Mr. Hughes was an English painter and this is one of his best-known works. Prominent in his own right, he also served as an assistant to the elderly William Holman Hunt, one of the leading Pre-Raphaelite painters.

I love that painting, we have a large print of it in our bedroom. Thanks for visiting my blog. Love your Henry Mitchell quote.
Happy Summer Solstice to you too!

I love the fairies! This painting really creates the image of Midsummer Eve.

Kim and Victoria, What a lovely coincidence about the painting! Yes, Henry Mitchell was a treasure.

Garden Joy 4 Me, Have a happy solstice in Canada!

Janet, It's enough to make you stay up late to watch for them, isn't it?

I'm Scrooge as far as the painting goes - don't see the appeal at all, but I love the sentiment of the posting, and a happy midsummer's eve to you too, Daffodil Planter.

I think midsummer has even more meaning for people at latitudes fairly far north--such as the British Isles. I just looked it up, and in London the sun sets at 9:21 and rises at 4:43 on June 21, and in Inverness it sets at about the same time (9:19) but rises at 3:19. I was in Inverness in late June once, and there was a long lingering glow in the evening after the sunset. Winter days are of course extremely short.

Not so familiar with Hughes, but a huge fan of the Pre-Raphaelites.
Do you happen to know where this painting is shown? The Tate, perhaps? Cheers, Alice

Emily, Perhaps you're a modernist? Happy Solstice and Summer to you too!

Jenny, Our sunsets are at 8:30 now--longer gardening hours in Scotland!

Bill, Heading over to enter your contest.

Alice, I haven't been able to find out where the painting lives. I'll keep at it.

Grace, So glad you like it!
